Hot Showers

September 30, 2008.  I love taking hot showers.  The feel of the water raining down on my head and chest, the heat getting into my muscles and relaxing them gently. The steam entering into my lungs, opening them up, gradually perking up my senses.  Amazing.

I also love to swim.  The feeling of almost-weightlessness as I glide through the water.  The cool entering in, spreading through my body.  It feels like an embrace.

I hate getting wet.

I know, it looks insane to me even as I write it.  How could I love showers and swimming (and water skiing and water slides and body boarding) and yet hate getting wet?  It doesn’t make sense.

And yet, there it is.  I hate that first moment when the water hits my body.  I find it uncomfortable.

I actually feel the same way about the first moment I step onstage or the first shot of the day on a shoot.  I LOVE to act, but that first moment?  Not so much.

There is always something, I think.  For things that we truly love, there is always some part of it that we just don’t.  And that’s okay.  My love of showers overcomes my dislike of getting wet.  My love of acting supersedes my fear of the first moment.

So, what is it that makes you uncomfortable?  What do you fear that might be keeping you from something you love?  Let’s all step into those places today and see what’s on the other side.  We might find something amazing.

As for me, I’m gonna go take a long, hot shower.

  1. Yeah, okay, you are a little crazy on this one! Not liking to get wet? Dude! But okay, I’ll admit I don’t like opening up my word processor to write. I don’t like those first few words I have to type. After that, it’s party-time, so I guess I do know what you mean :-)

  2. hmmm, interesting.

  3. can u elaborate on deep thinking isolating people?

  4. When I think deep, I go farther into myself, away from everyone else. I get trapped in my own head, separated from what’s going on around me. Processing things that are happening around us is great, as long as it’s not isolating us.
