Fun…ding

October 31, 2008.  Happy Halloween!

I’ve already eaten way too much candy, and yet I just can’t get enough.  Orange plastic pumpkin buckets filled with sugary confections mysteriously empty themselves if they remain too long in my general vicinity.

My kids are the same.  I’ve posted a video (taken on my wife’s cell phone) of my daughter being cut off from her candy source.  It perfectly illustrates the wildly different attitudes expressed towards Halloween by parents and children.

For me, money has always been a little bit like candy.  I go unconscious around cash in the same way I do around sweets.  If either commodity is left in my hands for any length of time, it is rapidly consumed.

Having lots of money is great.  Having lots of candy is great.

Spending lots of money makes me slightly ill.  Eating lots of candy does the same.

Sharing money makes me happy.  Sharing candy does too.

So, when it comes to money and funding, as well as candy and Halloween, the answer always comes back to whether or not I choose to stay conscious.

Grrrr…

Always with the personal responsibility.  It always comes back to me.

So, tonight I plan to give away much more candy than I consume.  The joy of giving it out outweighs the pleasure I get from eating it.  Don’t get me wrong.  I still plan on having my share.  I’m not giving up candy just yet.

I’m just practicing for my later interaction with money.  Using funds to better the lives of others around me through sharing sounds pretty awesome.  It makes the money spend on myself and mine that much more precious and meaningful.

  1. Besides the great post, what a great video. So that’s what we look like when we don’t get what we want? Lesson learned :-)

  2. Wow, is that great acting or what?

Bold choices, graphic intentions, internal obstacle and very clear objective- that girl’s a natural!
