Naps

November 30, 2008.  I love taking naps.

I will admit that many times my nap-taking is a vaguely thought out attempt to escape from something, but those aren’t really the naps I’m talking about.

I’m talking about the ones where you wake up feeling refreshed and envigorated.  I never wake up from the other kind of naps feeling that way.

Naps can be a recharger, a way to reset ourselves and prepare for a new round of work.  Sometimes when I’m feeling bogged down with a project, it simply takes a small break to get me back on track.

Allowing ourselves the option to “take a breather” is an important part of doing things that are outside our comfort zone.  Many times when I’m working on something difficult, I go in with the attitude of, “Well, let’s get this over with as soon as possible.”  But if I back up just a titch, allow myself some breathing room, and maybe take a break or two along the way, I find that I can accomplish what I set out to do with a lot less fussiness and a lot more attention to detail.

If I take too long out for my breaks, the result is actually the reverse.  How I feel at the end of the break is a good indicator of whether I’m resetting and refreshing or just procrastinating.

So, as I continue to work on fun stuff like marketing and such, I’m going to allow myself short breaks from time to time.  If I start to get overwhelmed, I may just walk away and work on something else for a while.

I may even allow for a nap or two along the way.  We’ll see.  I usually reserve those for Sunday afternoons.  It’s kind of a sacred space.  :)

But refreshing breaks?  Moments away from whatever’s giving me a headache?  Yeah.  Absolutely.
