Memorial Day/Last Meals
May 25, 2009. So, my baby brother is moving away and taking his family with him. We decided to have them over today for one last meal together.
We went to the butcher to get the really good hot dogs… you know, the ones that snap when you bite into them. We got all the fixings ready (and when I say all the fixings, I mean ALL the fixings: chili, cheese, bacon, sour cream, diced tomato, onions, etc., etc.). We got a watermelon. We made a cheesecake (and by we I mean my wife). It was AWESOME!
It almost made up for the fact that they’re moving away.
Except that it didn’t. Not even a little bit.
My wife and I moved to Southern California back in 1998 for me to go to grad school at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. After grad school we moved up to LA, where we were joined not too much later by my middle brother and his wife. He came out to become an optometrist. Then a couple of years after that, my youngest brother came out here to act.
My middle brother graduated several years ago, and he and his wife and son moved out to Louisiana. Now my youngest brother has decided to change careers. He’s going to grad school for psychology. Since he moved out to LA, he’s gotten married, had kids, grown up. He’s really not my baby brother anymore.
I’m really going to miss him. I’m going to miss them all. Our families have grown up together to a certain extent, and now they’re moving half-way across the US.
I’m also really proud of him. He knew that acting wasn’t for him, at the end of the day. He made the choice to move on to something else. He worked hard to finish up his undergraduate with honors, and then was accepted into one of the top schools in the nation. He and his family will do well.
And we’ll be out here in LA without family again.
That’s not exactly true, though, is it? We have family out here. They may not be related by blood, but they’ve been a part of our lives.
And I’m pretty sure that we’ll do well also.

It is always sad to see someone go, but as always you have the best attitude. I know you will do better than well, you will do great
